  1. Welcome to the new Spirit Tree Inn blog. We wish everyone a happy holiday season. We invite you to follow us on Facebook and Twitter. If you don't yet have plans for Christmas, think about staying with us and having a wonderful Christmas dinner that you don't have to cook.

  2. This morning we prepared the flower beds in the patio and planted three kinds of bulbs: Daffodils, Tulips and Narcissus. We should have beautiful blooms this spring.

  3. We just had a cancellation from a couple who were coming down to "get away from it all" because we don't have television in every room. Most people come down for the peace and quiet, to watch the many birds on the propeerty, to take a hike or to enjoy the many wineries in the nearby Sonoita/Elgin area.

  6. Good day readers. Today was just beautiful. The first part of December and the temperature was in the mid 70's. I spend the first part of the day in a Friends of the Library meeting, do you know that our town Patagonia will be hosting a Smithsonian Exibit in January 2014. There will be more as it becomes available.
We have been enlarging a water closet and today the drywaller were mudding the joints. Hopefully I'll be able to get in to tile in a couple days.
Any one looking for a great Holiday present, keep us in mind and purchase a gift certificate for a night or two stay at the Bead & Breakfast

  7. Hi All. It looks like we still have a couple of rooms and a casita available for Christmas. If you would like to enjoy Christmas without all the cooking, you might consider making a reservation to stay at Spirit Tree Inn. Tom will be making a wonderful dinner with all the fixings. I will make my delicious pecan pies.

  8. I got down to The Spirit Tree Inn this evening from Tucson and had a wonderful turkey soup that Tom had made from Thanksgiving turkey, a waldorf Salad that he whipped up and a Bourbon ice cream for dessert. It was wonderful!!! Just another example of Tom's delightful creations.

  9. As I got up this morning, the peace enfolded me and soothed my frazzeled nerves. You all need to come and experience this during this hectic holiday season. We still have rooms available.

  10. After a hectic day of shopping in Nogales Az, we returned to Spirit Tree to unload and make sure everything was ready for our guests by 2:30 pm. They still have not arrived and it is 3:40 pm. This is not unusual but I really wish that people would call us if they are going to be too late.

  11. Tom & I took Nina, our laid back rescue dog, for an after lunch walk up our canyon. What a beautiful day. The sky was a deep blue without a cloud. It is such a beautiful canyon with suprises around every curve. The sycamores are wearing their fall colors and, with their white bark, they are a contrast in color.

  12. Today started off beautifuly nice seasonaly warm temparature. Then the breezes started and the weather got more like this time of year. I winterized the garden with Xmas lights and freeze cloth. we're expected to get below freezing and it doesn't look any better for the next week or so.
The guests were treated to my specialty breakfast this morning, Blue Corn Mesquite Pancakes with Wilcox peaches and Turkey bacon.
Tomorrow I will finally get into the Equine Room and start tileing the remodeled bathroom; should look great when finished

  13. Last night I went to bed listening to the rain on the roof and this morning I listened to it again when I woke up. I welcome these winter rains even if they are a bit cold. The spring flowers should be fantastic.

  14. Well we made it!!! The world did not end!! Now you can all come to Spirit Tree and spend some quality time here. Listen to the peace and quiet. Very little road noise. No constant sirens. Just peace and quiet. You can recharge your batteries as I do every weekend.

  15. Our grounds and the surrounding area has become a winter wonderland. I woke to about 2 inches of Snow on Monday. What a way to end the old year and welcome the new. I would like to wish every one a properous and peaceful New Year. May 2013 treat us all with kindness.

  16. I am sorry that it has been so long since I last posted. We attended the PAII Convention in Las Vegas. We attended many seminars and networked with other Innkeepers. It was a very rewarding experience. Now we are back and getting ready for our busy season. Today, however, it is snowing. Indoor tasks will be the order of the day.

    ReplyDelete
  17. We had snow again this evening. It looks like about three inches. The weather channel predicts that there will be a warming trend.

    ReplyDelete
  18. What a beautiful day today. Most of the snow has finally melted. The cottenwood tree has started it's yearly "greening". The horses show signs of shedding. The is a good sign that winter is almost over and spring will soon arrive.

  19. Another beautiful day!!! After feeding our guests a wonderful gourmet breakfast and cleaning up, we sat in the patio and enjoyed the wonderful weather and the large selection of birds. Later we were joined by our dog, Nina, and our two cats, Sue & Callie.

  20. We are seeing more and more birds on our property. As the weather warms up, some of our color birds are showing up. We keep our feeders topped and the birds like it. Our guests enjoy sitting in the patio, relaxing and seeing the birds come in to feed. We have Northern and Arizona Cardinals, many varieties of finches and wrens and now the warblers are arriving. Of course, we have the Gila and Acorn Woodpeckers and the Mexican Blue Jays. Such noisy birds.

  21. Spring is definitely here. Our elf owls have returned. We have also seen Scotts and Hooded Orioles, a Hepatic Tanager as well as Annas and Broadbilled Hummingbirds. We had a busy week and weekend as it is spring break. I hope everyone has a safe spring break. Please be kind to each other.

  22. Since I have been posting on the AZNM bird list, we have had numerous calls each day from people notifying us that they would like to visit the Spirit Tree Inn B&B to bird. We asked that they call first as we don't want our guests to be bothered while staying here. The birding community have been very cooperative. One of the birds present on our property that birders are hoping to see is the rufous-backed robin.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Tom & I are sitting in "The Spot" waiting for our guests and enjoying the many birds on our property. We don't get to do this often as we are usually busy doing somethin on the property. We have seen Orioles, Hummingbirds, Finches, Wrens and Towhees. We have many other birds in our patio and on other areas of the Spirit Tree Inn. It is a beautiful day and we are enjoying it.

    ReplyDelete
  24. We had a busy week and an even busier weekend. Two couples from Scottsdale AZ and one from Tempe, AZ as well as a woman from CA. Not all were birders. Two couple came to check out the hiking and enjoy the wineries in the Sonoita/Elgin area. All things nature is part of the Spirit Tree Inn charm. The peace and quite is very stress relieving.

  25. We have some sad news. Our goat, Maurice, went to live in the green pasture in the sky. He was killed by of next door neighbor's dogs. He didn't deserve to die that way. We feel that, if a dog is dangerous, they should be kept penned up. If anyone has anything to say, please email us at spiritreeinn@aol.com or add to our blog.

  26. We had our "Spirit Tree", the big Fremont Cottonwood in the front field, measured by someone who goes around measuring big trees. The circumference of the tree at 4 1/2 feet is 321". The height is 101 feet and the spread is 102 feet. The tree's total points are 447.5. It doesn't make it the biggest of this kind of tree but it is certainly impressive. We will continue caring for it to the best of our ability and enjoy it's shade and the creatures in it's branches.

  27. I love meeting our guests and enjoy interacting with them. We get people from all over the US, some from Canada and even some from overseas. We get the occasional guest who cannot be pleased not matter what you do and we get the wonderful ones who are easy to please and love everything about our B & B. Last weekend we had a group stay at the Spirit Tree Inn. When they left, they took two of our signature mugs with them. I guess they needed them more than we do. Oh well, you live and learn! I would like to thank all the wonderful people who have stayed with us over the last eight years. We will be celebrating our eighth anniversay in August and will be offering discounts for repeat guests.

  28. Things are almost back to normal at Spirit Tree Inn after some of our summer projects are finished. We are offering a special military discount of 20% during the months of July and August 2013. This discount is good in addition to our summer rates. We also have a year round military discount. Remember that August is our 8th anniversary month and we have special rates for repeat guests. Coming in September, we will be doing a Back-to-school special of three nights for the price of two.

  30. This summer is almost over. The wineries are picking, crushing and getting ready for relesing new wines. We have been doing our usual summertime mowing, trimming and clean-up. Matt Brown, our local bird guide, brought a woman from Prescott to try to find her an elf owl. It is a bit late in the season but she had to bird from his car as her walker doesn't do well on rough ground. We had no luck until they left to try to find it elsewhere. Tom heard a reply from our elf owl as he headed out of the field. Thankfully, Matt was still in reach of Tom's cell phone and was able to return quickly. He parked as close as possible and was able to spotlight it for his client. I looked like an juvenile and once it started talking it didn't stop for a long time. It was also seen by our two guests from the Phoenix area who came down to see the Blue-footed Booby at Patagonia Lake. They were quite excited. Thank you Matt, for your help.

  31. Journey Stories
Journey Stories, a Smithsonian Institute Museum on Main Street exhibit, will be in our
community from Jan 4th until Feb 16, 2014. A grant from the Arizona Humanities Council brings
this event to Patagonia, where it will be hosted by the Patagonia Public Library in Cady Hall.
The exhibit allows the visitor to experience a display of photographs, maps, artifacts, audio
elements and text that bring to life the stories of migration and immigration, then segues into the
impact that evolving transportation methods have on our perceptions of individual freedoms.
A local companion exhibit, A Woven Journey, follows the threads of water, people, and progress,
illustrating Santa Cruz County’s place in the fabric of history. Eleven related events and
programs at six venues, hosted by nine different organizations in the Sonoita and Patagonia area
will bring facets of this history home to each of us. A full schedule of events will be forthcoming.
If you wish to serve as a docent for this exhibit, please contact Abbie Zeltzer at 520.394.2010 or
    azeltzer@patagoniapubliclibrary.org.

  32. We still have rooms available for our Fall Festival weekend which is the second weekend in October. You can check out the Fall Festival at www.patagoniaaz.com. Don't forget about the Smithsonian exhibit that will b in Patagonia starting January 4, 2014. We ended up with a good monsooon season and everything is green. Of course, with the green comes the grasshoppers and "wooley worms".

  33. Just a short posting to let you know about Patagonia Community Garden's "Pie Auction" tonight, 9/14, at 4:30 pm. This is the major fund raiser for the Community Garden. The proceeds are used for much needed projects. Last year they put in a green house. People make their favorite pies and bring them in to be auctioned off. There is good food including grilled corn right off the grill. If you are in town, come on over for a fun time.

  34. We had a wonderful wedding under the Spirit Tree on Oct. 5, 2013. Sabina and Thor, a local couple, became husband and wife. It was a truly Western wedding with guests sitting on bales of straw covered with burlap. The bride and her father arrived in a horse drawn carriage and the newlyweds left the same way. Everyone wore boots and the groom wore his best western hat. There were arounf 300 guests. A good time was had by all.

  35. Hi,
My wife and I stayed at the Spirit Tree a few years ago. I recently found an old piece of equipment in the reeds at Bog Hole in the San Rafael Valley and because I remember some of the old machinery collected at the Spirit Tree, I was wondering if Tom could help identify the piece I found. Can I send a photo for you to look at? Thanks, John Comé

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hi John,
Sorry for not answering sooner. I am sure that Tom would love to see a picture of the piece that you found. You can email it to spiritreeinn@aol.com and I will make sure that he sees it. I am so glad that you remembered us. We are turning the Amish barn and all the tools into a museum that we will open to all schools so that the kids will be able to see the old tools and equipment used by their ancestors.

  37. We opened two rooms to our military on Veterans Day again this year. We do this to honor and thank those men and women, present and past, in the military who keep this country free. We have a discount for them also all year and for any room or casita to show our continuing appreciation. Spirit Tree Inn B & B would be a wonderful, peaceful place to get away to any time.
